Carson Wentz has found a new home. The Philadelphia Eagles have traded quarterback Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts for a 2021 third-round pick and a conditional 2022 second-round pick according to Adam Schefter. The second-round pick could become a first-round pick if Wentz plays at least 75% of the snaps or plays 70% of the snaps and the Colts make the playoffs in 2021.
The top two picks from the 2016 NFL draft have been traded within the last three weeks with Jared Goff going to the Lions at the end of January. According to USA Today, the Eagles will take the largest dead cap hit in NFL history as they will take a 33.8 million dollar hit. The Colts were looking for a new quarterback after Philip Rivers announced his retirement. Wentz had a lot of success with the Eagles when Frank Reich was the offensive coordinator there. In 2017, Wentz finished second in the MVP race.
The Eagles now have decisions to make at the quarterback position going forward. The team still has Jalen Hurts on the roster but drafting a quarterback with the sixth overall pick is not fully out of the question. The team has needs at quite a few positions including wide receiver, offensive line, and the secondary. However, the quarterback position should not be fully ignored if a guy like Justin Fields is available at number six.
Wentz had his ups and downs last season. He threw for 2,620 yards, 16 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He was also sacked a league-high 50 times in just 12 games. Wentz actually played really well the previous three seasons. He threw 81 touchdowns and just 21 interceptions in that span.
The Eagles are likely going into a rebuild while the Colts look to make a Super Bowl run starting next year. If Wentz can return to a form similar to what he was in 2017, then the Colts will be a serious threat to the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills in the AFC next season.
